But a goal from Maximiliano Pereira in injury time ensured a dramatic conclusion as Uruguay poured forward looking for an equaliser.

With the tournament crying out for an exciting game, the teams swapped spectacular goals in the first half as Holland's Gio van Bronckhorst and then Uruguay's Diego Forlan struck from distance.
But it was Sneijder's goal that left a sour taste in Uruguayan mouths as his shot passed directly under the foot of Robin van Persie with the Arsenal striker standing in a marginally offside position.

Afterwards, Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez - whose team reached the last four with a controversial win over Ghana - said: 'The Dutch are very gifted and can create from any situation. They scored a beautiful goal early on.
But it was the second goal that was decisive. Now you can see that Van Persie was offside and that the game could have been different. After that, they were more at ease.
